Basic Immunological Mechanisms

The immune system presents a fascinating set of cells and complex interactions that can be targeted and studied with ease. Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh are exploring signal transduction pathways in immune cells, fundamental dendritic cell biology, apoptosis, metabolic responses to cytokines and inflammation, antigen presentation, immunoglobulin gene expression and the generation of immunological memory. Aside from the inherent interest in the action of immune-related cells, understanding the basic mechanisms of immune cell growth and development are key to our ability to enhance the therapeutic action of the immune system.
