Molecular Basis of Infectious Diseases
Gaining insight into the mechanisms of the host-pathogen relationship will eventually lead to improvements in the areas of disease prevention, vaccine development, and antimicrobial drug design. Program members are investigating the mechanisms of protective immunity in several infectious disease systems including tuberculosis, HIV, parasitic infections, and other chronic diseases. Other areas currently under investigation by program faculty include the role of opportunistic pathogens in the progression of AIDS, host-pathogen interactions of importance in sexually transmitted diseases, as well as the role of microorganisms in immune-medicated diseases.
